Children and Career Choices

Uncategorized

I recently met my ex-boss and his daughter who had just completed her degree in English Literature in UK. I was pretty impressed at how flexible he and his wife were at allowing their daughter to pursue what she wanted instead of pushing her into the typical Asian stereotype careers such as those in the Accountancy, Legal or Medical fields.

I guess its normal for all Asian parents to have high hopes in their children and to support them to be someone great someday, whether as Tennessee injury lawyers or investment bankers. However, most Asian parents are usually more concerned as to how much the job will earn them as opposed to their interests and happiness.

I wonder if I would be that sort of parent someday if my child ever tells me they’ll rather be a ballet dancer, photographer or an artist!
