Tips On Finding Your Wedding Photographer
Wedding PhotographersI love good photography and over the five agonizing months I spent looking for a wedding photographer, I realised that wedding photography is a very personal choice. Friends or forums may recommend all kinds of photographers based on their own experience but take some time to find the one that you truly love. I’ve added 10 tips below from my personal experience during my wedding photographer hunt out of the many wedding photographers out there.
-
Decide what type of photography you would prefer. The trend now is leaning towards artistic documentaries where wedding photographers document the entire day’s events through candid shots.
-
Take time to go through their websites to look at the wedding photos they have taken. See if their style appeals to you.
-
Always, always, always arrange for a meet up with them. This is the only way you can meet them face to face, interact with them and see if they are people you can work with. Your wedding is a really special day in your life and if you can’t work with your photographer well, he/she wouldn’t be able to capture the essence and magic of the day.
-
I would strongly recommend preparing a list of questions before you meet them. While not vital, it would be good to find out how long they have been in photography, how they work and how they cope with unconventional situations. It helps you know if they have the necessary experience.
-
Do be aware that the shots you see on their websites and sample albums may probably be their best shots so do not be afraid to ask them to show you shots they may not have been so happy with.
-
Be open and bounce any ideas you might have off them. That will help you decide if they are rigid or flexible in their styles. Some photographers I have met before aren’t too open about trying different things that are not part of their style. Others are totally open and game for just about anything!
-
Learn what their favourites are and see if those are your favourites too! If they are, you have a winning combo!
-
Professional wedding photographers don’t come cheap so while it’s tempting to squeeze the budget on this and get a friend with a DSLR to cover your day for you, don’t forget that your photos are the only memories you will have of this special day! Many photographers are flexible and if you really like their work, they will try to work around your budget to see what they can offer you.
-
Otherwise, if you cannot afford the pros, look around for up and coming photography stars. There are lots of young photographers out there who have lots of potential for becoming pros. It takes a little more time and some imagination but you will know who they are when you hear their passion for photography.
-
Once you’ve found your wedding photographer, continue to be in touch with them and share ideas so by the time your wedding day comes around, you would have established a rapport with them which is so important for getting fun and relaxed shots.
Happy hunting! It’ll be worth it
